The Wig Install Hack That Makes All the Difference
When it comes to wearing wigs, one essential step that can dramatically enhance the natural appearance of your unit is bleaching the knots.
If you’re new to wigs or looking to step up your install game, this blog post will explain what knot bleaching is, why it's important, and how it transforms your wig.
What Are Wig Knots?
When individual hair strands are tied to the lace base of a wig, they’re secured with small knots. These knots are usually visible on the scalp area of the wig, particularly with darker hair. Without bleaching, these tiny knots can create an unnatural, "dotted" look on your lace, making it obvious that you’re wearing a wig.
Why Bleach Knots?
✅ Creates a Scalp-Like Illusion
Bleaching lightens the knots so they blend better with your skin tone, making the lace appear more like a real scalp.
✅ Elevates Your Install
A properly bleached wig gives a more professional finish to your overall look. Even with minimal makeup or styling, a natural-looking scalp makes a huge difference — and you’ll feel more confident wearing your wig.
Should Everyone Bleach Their Knots?
Not always! Here’s when you should consider it:
If your wig has dark knots (common with dark hair colors)
If you plan to wear the wig in exposed-part styles
If you want a flawless, “melted” look
However, bleaching is not necessary for:
Light-colored wigs (blonde, ash brown) that already have invisible knots
Pre-bleached units — some custom wigs already come with the knots bleached (our custom & readymade wigs come ready to wear)
Quick Bleaching Tips for Beginners
Use the right developer – 30 volume works best. Too strong can cause the knots to process too quickly, which will damage the hair and cause shedding.
Mix to the right consistency –A 1:1 ratio with a consistency like toothpaste. This prevents bleach from seeping through the lace and bleaching the roots.
Apply gently – Evenly spread the paste; don’t press. Only cover the knots, not the roots.
Use Got2B Spray - Apply the spray on the hairline before bleaching and brush hairs back to prevent it from bleaching the roots.
Time it carefully – Usually 15–25 minutes, but always check as you go.
Neutralise properly – Use purple shampoo to tone yellow knots, and blue shampoo for orange tones.
Condition - After bleaching and toning, apply conditioner to the hair on the lace.
Wig quality - A good lace wig makes it easier to bleach knots, while poor-quality wigs may require you to bleach twice—or may not bleach at all.
